In a solemn address, US President Joe Biden on Monday reiterated US’ unwavering support for Israel and said that the Jewish state has the right to defend itself against continued threats from groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and others.
“The October 7th attack brought to the surface painful memories left by millennia of hatred and violence against the Jewish people. That is why, soon after the attack, I became the first American President to visit Israel in a time of war. I made clear then to the people of Israel: you are not alone,” said President Biden in a statement.
He said, one year later, he and Vice President Kamala Harris remain fully committed to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist.
“We support Israel’s right to defend itself against attacks from Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Iran. Last week, at my direction, the United States military once again actively assisted in the successful defence of Israel, helping to defeat an Iranian ballistic missile attack,” added the President.
Biden said that his administration has been actively involved in securing the release of hostages, having successfully negotiated for more than 100 individuals, including American citizens.
“Today and every day, I think of the hostages and their families. I have met the families of the hostages and grieved with them. They have been through hell. My Administration has negotiated for the safe release of more than 100 hostages, including Americans. We will never give up until we bring all of the remaining hostages home safely,” said Biden.

He reiterated the need for a ceasefire that would not only ensure the safe return of hostages but also facilitate humanitarian aid for those affected by the ongoing conflict.
As the Jewish community commemorates this tragic anniversary, it is a time for reflection, mourning, and a renewed commitment to achieving peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
President Biden concluded his remarks by honoring the spirit of resilience within the Jewish community, saying, “May their memory be a blessing.”
