An off-duty NYPD officer, identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, was among five people killed in a mass shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a four-year veteran of the police force, is being hailed as a hero.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams remembered Officer Islam as a devoted public servant and family man. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence , including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam,” he said at a press conference. “He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers… He loved this city, and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person who believed in God.”
Islam is survived by his wife, eight months pregnant, and two sons. Mayor Adams said he met with the grieving family and told them, “He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line.”
Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department.
