US President Donald Trump said that he does not want to stop the H-1B visa programme and welcomed “competent people” coming into the country, news agency PTI reported.
Trump also said that he appreciates both sides of the debate on the programme.
“I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping other people who may not have the qualifications they do. I don’t want to stop…,” Trump said.
‘…high-quality waiters, you’ve got to get the best people’: Trump
Trump emphasised the need for competent and skilled individuals coming into the country, not just engineers but professionals in every field, including “high-quality waiters.”
“And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme. Maître d’s, wine experts, even waiters—high-quality waiters—you’ve got to get the best people. People like Larry need engineers. NASA also needs engineers like nobody’s ever needed them," Trump said.
Trump made these comments during a joint press conference at the White House with Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The H-1B visa debate is not new. In the United States, it has long been a topic of discussion as skilled non-Americans take top jobs in the country due to this policy.
