A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Assam on Sunday evening, with tremors felt in Guwahati, Bhutan and parts of north Bengal. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit Assam on Sunday evening, with the epicentre near Dhekiajuli, according to the US Geological Survey. Tremors were felt in Guwahati, Bhutan, and parts of north Bengal.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km, the GFZ said. No casualties or property damage have been reported so far, officials confirmed.

Panic gripped Guwahati as residents rushed out of their homes. Former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on X, “Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being.”

An earthquake struck at 4:41 pm with its epicentre in Assam’s Udalguri district at a depth of 5 km, officials said. Tremors were felt across several northeastern states as well as in neighbouring Bhutan.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa said there were no reports of major damage or casualties. “We are actively monitoring the situation,” he wrote on X.
