Netanyahu calls for ‘historic peace deal’ with Saudi Arabia, touts Abraham Accords at UN

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country must achieve a peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, citing the experience of the Abraham Accords.

In his address at the UN General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that one of the best ways to foil Iran’s nefarious designs is to achieve peace.

“I say to you, what blessing such a peace with Saudi Arabia would bring – it would be a boon to the security and economy of our two countries, it would boost trade and tourism across the region, it would help transform the Middle East into a global juggernaut,” he was quoted by the Guardian as saying.

“Such a peace, I’m sure, would be a true pivot of history: it would usher in a historic reconciliation between the Arab world and Israel, between Islam and Judaism, between Mecca and Jerusalem,” the Israeli leader said.

Netanyahu also said that Israel is seeking peace despite fighting for its life in the face of ”savage enemies” who want its annihilation,".

”My country is at war, fighting for its life,” Netanyahu said in a speech at the U.N. General Assembly. ”We must defend ourselves against these savage murderers. Our enemies seek not only to destroy us, they seek to destroy our common civilization and return all of us to a dark age of tyranny and terror.”

Netanyahu also lashed out at the United Nations, accusing it of becoming a “contemptuous farce” as he denounced the world body’s unfair treatment of his country.

The Abraham Accords are bilateral agreements on Arab–Israeli normalisation signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and between Israel and Bahrain on September 15, 2020. Mediated by the United States, the announcement of August 13, 2020, concerned Israel and the UAE before the subsequent announcement of an agreement between Israel and Bahrain on September 11, 2020.

As part of the two agreements, both the UAE and Bahrain recognized Israel’s sovereignty, enabling the establishment of full diplomatic relations.
