A curfew was implemented in Nepal’s Bara district near the Indian border on Wednesday following violent clashes between Gen Z youths and members of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), known as CPN-UML. The conflict arose amid rising political tensions related to the recent dissolution of Nepal’s House of Representatives and ongoing protests.
Curfew imposed near Simara airport
The Bara district administration announced a curfew effective from 12:30 pm to 8 pm within a 500-meter radius around Simara Airport. The measure was taken after hundreds of Gen Z activists gathered at the airport, chanting slogans against the CPN-UML party. The curfew aims to restore peace and prevent further unrest in the area.
Clash triggered by political leaders’ arrival
The confrontation started when news spread that CPN-UML general secretary Shankar Pokharel and youth leader Mahesh Basnet were arriving at Simara by Buddha Air flight to address an anti-government rally. The Gen Z protesters, opposed to the party led by former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, assembled in protest. This led to clashes with local party cadres at the airport, resulting in disruptions and heightened tensions.
Flight cancellations and political backdrop
Following the violence, Buddha Airlines cancelled all domestic flights between Kathmandu and Simara for the day, including the flight carrying the CPN-UML leaders who returned to Kathmandu. The party has been actively organising protests demanding the reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives, a move triggered by the Gen Z movement that ended Oli’s government. Gen Z activists also demand accountability for the alleged mass killings of protesters during anti-corruption and social media ban demonstrations earlier this year.
