Modi in France: AI declaration, new consulate and nuclear reactor partnership; key outcomes of 2-day visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to France bore several outcomes that are expected to strengthen ties between the two countries within the next few years.

On Wednesday, PM Modi inaugurated the Indian Consulate in Marseilles alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.

The prime minister also visited the Mazargues War Cemetery to pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who were part of the First World War.

PM Modi’s trip to France, which is on its last leg, was a culmination of the advanced India-France relationship as he shared decisive moments with President Macron, a sign of growing friendship with Paris. Apart from co-chairing the AI Action Summit, PM Modi and his “friend” Macron sat down together to discuss ways through which the relationship can prosper.

Here’s a look at all that was achieved during the prime minister’s visit to France:

  • India-France Declaration on Artificial Intelligence (AI): The two countries have expressed their commitment to promote safe, secure and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems and meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

  • Launch of the Logo for the India-France Year of Innovation 2026

  • Letter of Intent between the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) France to establish the Indo-French Center for the Digital Sciences

  • Agreement for hosting 10 Indian Startups at the French Start-up incubator Station F

  • Declaration of Intent on establishment of partnership on Advanced Modular Reactors and Small Modular Reactors: India and France have agreed to collaborate on building advanced modular reactors and small modular reactors for civil use.

  • Renewal of MoU between the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), India and Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives of France (CAE)

  • Implementing Agreement between DAE of India and CEA of France concerning cooperation between GCNEP India and Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN) France

  • Join Declaration of Intent on Triangular Development Cooperation: Through this, India and France will focus on the implementation of climate and SDG-related projects in the Indo-Pacific regions

  • Joint Inauguration of India’s Consulate in Marseille

  • Declaration of Intent between The Ministry for the Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, Marine Affairs and Fisheries and The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the Field of Environment
