 "Misplaced priorities? Poll shows Trump isn’t focusing on issues that Americans want")
A recent CBS News/YouGov survey has found that most Americans don’t believe President Donald Trump is prioritising what they actually want.
The poll, conducted from February 26 to 28, revealed that above 80 per cent of Americans wanted the government to focus on issues such as econothe my and inflation. Furthermore, 58 per cent of those surveyed believed taxes and government spending should be the highest priority for the Trump administration. Just 43 per cent of people said the federal workforce should be a priority.
However, when asked what they thought Trump was prioritising “a lot”, 73 per cent said the US-Mexico border, 69 per cent said federal workforce and 36 per cent of people said economy. Interestingly, just 29 per cent of those surveyed said inflation was the topmost focus of the Trump administration.
Overall job rating
The CBS poll showed that Trump enjoyed an overall job rating of 51 per cent and a disapproval rating of 49 per cent.
44 per cent of people said their country was doing well today, up from 35 per cent in January.
Interestingly, on the issue of America’s relations with foreign nations, 42 per cent of people said they have changed for the worse.
Russia-Ukraine war
The poll showed the support for Ukraine remained at 52 per cent amongst Americans, with just four per cent of them supporting Russia. The rest said they supported none.
Notably, 46 per cent of people said Trump’s actions and statements have favoured Russia, while 43 per cent believed they affected both Russia and Ukraine equally.
A majority of Americans largely approved Trump’s handling of wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Wasteful spending in federal government
Most Americans agreed, the poll showed, that the federal government wastes money, a view shared across party lines.
However, opinions differ on the extent and cause of the waste. Republicans believe there is significant waste, primarily due to fraud, while Democrats see a smaller amount, mainly resulting from poor spending decisions. Overall, 51 per cent of Americans believe there is a lot of wasteful spending by the government.
