Military record to fertility treatment, what Walz said in joint interview with Harris

In the highly-anticipated joint interview with US Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz dismissed the accusations that he “misstated” about his military records. In the first major sit-down interview of the Harris campaign, CNN’s Dana Bash asked Walz about remarks he made in 2018 when he was running for Congress.

At that time, the former school teacher said that he “carried a weapon of war in war” as he discussed his support for restricting assault weapons. However, Walz who served 24 years in the National Guard was never deployed in a war zone. During the Thursday interview, Walz blamed the whole saga on his “poor grammar” and admitted that he “misspoke”.

“Yeah, I said — we were talking about in this case, this was after a school shooting, the ideas of carrying these weapons of war. And my wife the English teacher told me my grammar’s not always correct,” the Minnesota governor explained. However, Walz made it clear that he never intended to demean another member’s service to the country.

‘My record speaks for itself’: Walz 

While Walz admitted that he “misspoke” he went on to defend his military record. “Well, first of all, I’m incredibly proud. I’ve done 24 years of wearin’ uniform of this country. Equally proud of my service in a public school classroom, whether it’s Congress or — or the governor. My record speaks for itself, but I think people are coming to get to know me. I — I speak like they do. I speak candidly. I wear my emotions on my sleeves, and I speak especially passionately about — about our children being shot in schools and around — around guns,” he said.

“So I think people know me. They know who I am. They know where — where my heart is, and again, my record has been out there for over 40 years — to speak for itself,” the Minnesota governor furthered.

The Minnesota governor expressed astonishment over how the Republicans are either attacking him for his children “for showing love” or it’s “an attack on my dog”.

Walz mentioned that he spoke about his and his wife’s infertility issues “because it’s hell, and families know this”. “I spoke about the treatments that were available to us … That’s quite a contrast in folks that are trying to take those rights away from us,” he said.

He also candidly recalled the moment his son, Gus, was seen tearing up and saying: “That’s my dad.” “You try to protect your kids, you know it brings notoriety and things but it was such a visceral emotional moment. I’m grateful I got to experience and I’m so proud of him,” he exclaimed.
