A protest organised by pro-monarchy supporters turned violent on Friday as demonstrators launched a coordinated attack on the Annapurna Media Network (AMN) Tower in Kathmandu’s Tinkune, raising concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nepal.

The protest escalated rapidly, with individuals throwing stones at the AMN building that shattered windows and attempts made to set it on fire. The attack resulted in significant damage to the building and posed serious risks to the lives of reporters and staff inside.

AMN, known for its commitment to unbiased and reliable news, has long been regarded as a respected independent media outlet. The attack has prompted widespread apprehension about the increasing threats faced by media professionals in the country.

In addition to targeting AMN, the protesters also set fire and caused significant damage to several commercial and residential properties in the Tinkune area.

In the wake of the attack, Annapurna Media Network (AMN) has called on both national and international communities to take immediate action to protect journalists and safeguard media institutions.

This assault is being viewed as an attack on democratic values and free press, requesting global media rights organisations to strongly condemn the violence.

“AMN remains committed to its mission of responsible journalism but stresses the urgent need for collective efforts to protect press freedom in Nepal and prevent future attacks on media houses and other corporate entities,” the media house said in a statement.

We call upon national and international organisations to stand with us in solidarity, and we urge the government to take strict action against those responsible for this horrific act of violence,” said the General Manager of Annapurna Media Network.
