‘Main character? He’s the whole storyline’: Sam Altman shares MyGovIndia’s Studio Ghibli strokes on PM Modi

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday reshared the Government of India’s post featuring the viral Ghibli-style art created by ChatGPT, highlighting key moments from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure.

Altman reposted the images on his X account with the emoji of the Indian flag.

Last week, MyGovIndia’s X account hopped on to the trend and used ChatGPT to transform PM Modi’s pictures into the world-famous Ghibli style. The pictures featured US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The legendary Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, was founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki in 1985. Its creations have been widely appreciated for their soft colours, expressive characters and soothing strokes.

Last month, OpenAI’s ChatGPT rolled out a feature allowing users to “Ghibli-fy” their images. Thousands of users quickly transformed their pictures and stormed social media, making it trending for days.

“The ChatGPT launch 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments I’d ever seen, and we added one million users in five days. We added one million users in the last hour," Altman said, referring to the popularity of the Ghibli trend.

The rise of AI-generated artwork in the style of Studio Ghibli has sparked renewed debates about intellectual property and the authenticity of art. Amid this trend, a vintage video of Hayao Miyazaki reappeared online, in which the celebrated filmmaker vehemently criticized AI-generated images. In the footage, Miyazaki scolded AI researchers who showed him their creations, calling them “an insult to life itself.”
