Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell has said that the deployment of federal military forces is creating “confusion” and can complicate the city’s situation.
US President Donald Trump on Monday authorised the mobilisation of 700 US Marines and thousands more National Guard troops to Los Angeles to quell the uprising against immigration raids.
“The possible arrival of federal military forces in Los Angeles – absent clear coordination – presents a significant logistical and operational challenge for those of us charged with safeguarding this city,” McDonell said.
He asserted that the LAPD has experience in handling large-scale protests and is confident to do so “professionally and effectively” this time too. “We are urging open and continuous lines of communication between all agencies to prevent confusion, avoid escalation and ensure a coordinated, lawful and orderly response during this critical time,” the police chief added.
California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom slammed the Trump administration over the deployment of federal forces, saying, “Trump is trying to provoke chaos by sending 4,000 soldiers onto American soil.”
Chaos is exactly what Trump wanted, and now California is left to clean up the mess.

We’re working with local partners to surge over 800 additional state and local law enforcement officers to ensure the safety of our LA communities.
Over the weekend, protestors and security forces engaged in a standoff that took place in the suburb of Paramount, where demonstrators converged on a reported federal facility that the local mayor said was being used as a staging post by agents.

Trump defends deployment
Meanwhile, Trump on Monday defended his decision to deploy the National Guard amid recent unrest in Los Angeles, claiming the move stopped the city from being “completely obliterated.”
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated.”
‘LA being used as a test case’
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “I don’t think our city should be used for an experiment,” adding that the federal government taking over the situation from local police enforcement authorities is “unlawful”.
“Do you know what the national guard are doing? They are guarding two buildings … that’s what they’re doing, so they need marines on top of it?” she asked after the government deployed the Marines.
