Israeli forces carried out a “targeted strike” in central Gaza on Saturday against an individual reportedly planning attacks on Israeli troops, the Israeli military said.
The action comes under a U.S.-backed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, in place more than two years after the war in the Gaza Strip began, although both sides have accused each other of violations. Israel said the strike targeted a member of Islamic Jihad, while the Palestinian group has yet to comment.
Witnesses reported seeing a drone strike hit a car, causing it to catch fire. Local medics said four people were injured, but no immediate deaths were reported. Separate reports indicated that Israeli tanks shelled eastern parts of Gaza City, the territory’s largest urban centre. The Israeli military had not commented on these shelling reports.
Several Israeli media sites said Israel, in a reversal of a policy of barring entry to foreign forces, had allowed Egyptian officials into the Gaza Strip to help locate the bodies of hostages taken captive in the Hamas-led attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, that triggered the war.
As part of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas has said it will return all the hostages it abducted, but the remains of 18 are still in the enclave.
