As the situation has continued to worsen in Iran, India is preparing to evacuate citizens from the country, sources in the government have told CNN-News 18.

The development has come a day after India asked all citizens to leave Iran. The advisory was issued in the midst of continuing threats from US President Donald Trump that raised the prospects of an American attack on Iran that could destabilise the country and the region.

Sources said that the first batch of Indians in Iran have been informed to be ready to leave at 8 am on Friday.

In the advisory, the Embassy of India in Iran on Wednesday asked all citizens in the country to register with the embassy. But the process has been slow due to the internet shutdown in the country. Family members of Indians in Iran could register on their behalf at https://www.meaers.com/request/home.

The advisory said that “Indian nationals who are currently in Iran (students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists) are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights”.

The embassy said it has set up four helplines: +98 9128109115, +98 9128109109, +98 9128109102; +98 9932179359.

For more than two weeks, Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests that began with outrage over the collapse of currency and the broader disgruntlement against the poor state of the economy. The movement soon turned into a nationwide revolt against Iran’s theocratic regime and its failure to ensure economic stability and grant meaningful personal and freedom freedoms.

The protests have emerged as the greatest threat to Iran’s theocratic regime in five decades. Among all the protests in recent years, the death toll in ongoing protests has been considered to be the highest. Estimates have ranged from hundreds to 2,000 to 12,000 and higher.
