Iran goes after Israeli 'spies' in Tehran, files 50 cases for collaborating with arch-rival during recent conflict

Iran’s judiciary has filed 50 cases in Tehran against individuals accused of collaborating with Israel, judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said Saturday, pledging rapid prosecution and no tolerance for those facing charges.

“Close cooperation and coordination between law enforcement and the judiciary led to the formation of around 50 cases in Tehran within less than two weeks,” Jahangir said during a press conference. He added that the charges include “rumor-mongering” and creating “public anxiety,” per a report by Iran International.

Jahangir said the judiciary would not permit delays in the legal process. “We will show no leniency,” he said. “We will not allow these cases to be dragged out.”

According to the spokesman, 32 online accounts had been flagged. Most owners edited their content after receiving warnings and avoided formal charges. However, ten individuals were charged, with some remaining in custody and others released on bail.

He also said several individuals had been arrested on espionage charges, although court rulings had yet to be issued. “Some have been informed of their charges as spies, but until a court ruling is issued, no one can be legally labeled a spy,” Jahangir said.

He declined to say how many were charged with spying for Israel. “Every one of these traitors holds valuable information that must be extracted thoroughly before any sentencing,” he added. “This process is essential for identifying others involved.”

Jahangir also addressed the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin prison. He confirmed that five inmates convicted of financial crimes were killed, with others injured in the attack.

“All prisoners were relocated to other facilities within hours,” he said, rejecting reports that some detainees were missing or unable to contact their families.

Jahangir acknowledged that a few inmates escaped during the chaos. “A few took advantage of the situation and fled, but the number is not significant. They will be recaptured and returned,” he said.
