A young Indian woman in the US was allegedly caught shoplifting clothes, including some men’s items, from a store, according to a viral video circulating on social media.
The video shows her crying and apologising to police officers after being accused of stealing without paying. The original clip, reportedly first posted on Facebook, has since been deleted, though multiple versions continue to surface online.
Firstpost could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
According to the video, the woman told police she had taken the clothes for her brother in India, who liked “Made in USA” products. She claimed she forgot to pay and pleaded with officers not to handcuff her, saying, “Please, give me a chance.” As police repeatedly asked her to turn around, she continued sobbing, saying, “No sir, sorry. Please.”
When she asked what would happen next, an officer explained she would be taken to the station and released after a few hours. Despite her pleas, she was eventually handcuffed and escorted away. Reports say she may face felony retail theft charges.
Her identity, the exact store location, and the value of the stolen items have not been officially confirmed. Authorities are investigating the case.
Netizens react
The incident drew widespread criticism online. One user wrote, “Why do they steal from the US and other countries they travel to? These are often highly educated Indians who can afford foreign education and travel.”
Another said, “Cases of Indians caught shoplifting abroad damage the reputation of the entire diaspora. Crime is crime, and legal consequences are real.”
