In a tragic turn of events, an Indian student named Tanya Tyagi, studying at the University of Calgary in Canada, was found dead under suspicious conditions, according to a statement released by the Consulate General of India in Vancouver on Thursday (June 19).
The consulate expressed its condolences to the family and stated, “We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary.”
“The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased,” the post by the consulate read.

Tyagi was pursuing her Master’s in Food Safety and Quality at Calgary University, and she had previously studied at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, reported News18, citing her LinkedIn profile.
Fourth mysterious death in three months
Tyagi’s death follows at least three such incidents involving Indian students in Canada in the past three months.
In April 2025, 21-year-old Vanshika Saini was found dead near a beach in Ottawa after being missing for four days. The High Commission of India in Ottawa confirmed her death, noting that local police are investigating. Saini disappeared on April 25 after leaving to view a rental property. Her phone went offline that night, and she missed an important exam the next day, which India Today reported was uncharacteristic of her.
Around a week prior, 21-year-old Harsimrat Randhawa, a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, was killed by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop. Hamilton police confirmed she was caught in crossfire between two vehicles, according to Business Today.
On April 4, 27-year-old Dharmesh Kathireeya, a Gujarat native on a work permit, was fatally stabbed by a neighbour in Rockland, Ontario. The alleged attacker reportedly used racial slurs before the assault. Kathireeya’s employer, Milano Pizza Rockland, temporarily closed in his memory.
