A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, sending people running out of buildings in Yangon and even in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) and was followed by a strong aftershock.

The epicentre was 17.2 km from Mandalay, a city with about 1.2 million residents.

The earthquake caused panic as buildings swayed and water spilled from rooftop pools. Videos on social media showed cars rocking and people rushing onto the streets.

A viral video from Shanghai Daily captured water cascading from a rooftop swimming pool in Bangkok as the tremors shook high-rise buildings.
