Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the Myanmar junta chief in Bangkok this week on the sidelines of the Bimstec conference, following India’s prompt reaction to aid in rescue and relief operations in the aftermath of the neighbouring country’s terrible earthquake.
“It is hoped that a meeting and discussion with the chairman of the State Administration Council and the Prime Minister of Myanmar will take place soon,” a Myanmar statement said after Modi spoke with Gen Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday.
Modi called the junta commander on Saturday to offer all possible support after Myanmar experienced its biggest earthquake in years. India was the first responder, sending numerous tranches of aid following the terrible earthquake. Other countries that offered assistance to Myanmar were Russia, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia.
India began Operation Brahma on Saturday to assist with rescue and relief efforts, supplying tonnes of food, tents, medications, sleeping bags, rescue teams and equipment, a canine squad and a fully operational field hospital.
