External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said that he had discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, sharing developments in the India-Pakistan tensions. In both the calls the EAM made it clear India’s response to the recent provocation from Pakistan “has been measured.”
He also held a call with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani and shared the same message. “India has been measured in its actions. However, any escalation will get a firm response,” Jaishankar wrote on X, sharing the information of his phone calls with world leaders.

“Deeply appreciate the US commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism,” he wrote separately in the post, where he spoke about the phone call with Rubio. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated on Thursday evening after Pakistan conducted coordinated strikes in several parts of India. The attack was intercepted by the Indian air defence system, averting major havoc.

Before the evening attack from Pakistan, Jaishankar told his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi that India’s response to the Pahalgam attack was “targeted and measured”, the same stance he took in the recent post.
Araghchi was in India to co-chair the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran. It was the Iranian foreign minister’s first visit to India since assuming office in August 2024.
“You are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric terrorist attack on 22nd April in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This attack compelled us to respond on 7th May by striking at the cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our response was targeted and measured. It is not our intention to escalate the situation,” Jaishankar told the Iranian FM.
“However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very, very firm response. As a neighbour and close partner, you must have a good understanding of the situation. Once again, a very warm welcome,” he added.
