Addressing a joint press conference alongside German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Berlin, Jaishankar said, “…Our interactions in defence and security have increased. We held the first-ever air exercises this year. And we hope to welcome your naval ships in Goa next month. Our policy and other exchanges have been mutually beneficial. And we would like to explore how our defence industries can cooperate more closely….”
Listing out the details of the meeting with his German counterpart, Jaishankar said that the two leaders discussed PM Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine and also talked about the situation in West Asia/Middle East, especially the Gaza conflict and its ramifications.
“…I also touched briefly on our cooperation with the EU. With the incoming Commission, we hope to move faster on the FTA, and other agreements and we count on Germany’s support for that. Also, we would like to hold an early meeting of the Trade and Technology Council…,” said the External Affairs Minister.
Earlier in the day, he also addressed the Annual Ambassadors’ Conference of the German Foreign Office in Berlin.
Speaking at the conference, Jaishankar said that Germany should update its export control regime to foster greater defence cooperation with India and look at ways to ramp up bilateral trade and investments.
Impact Shorts
More ShortsGermany enforces some of Europe’s strictest controls on defense exports but has recently eased these restrictions to permit sales of small arms to the Indian military and to compete for a substantial submarine contract with the Indian Navy. This shift aligns with a broader overhaul of Germany’s defense policy.
Jaishankar highlighted that with India being a nearly $4 trillion economy and projected to grow at 8% for decades, the evolving business climate and changes within the country should encourage increased trade and investment.
Jaishankar, who is in Germany on the second leg of a three-nation tour, called for enhanced cooperation in innovation and technology, especially AI, fintech and green technologies, and for close consultation between the two countries on global issues to build trust and confidence in their partnership.
He said that India is seeking to build a stronger relationship with Germany and hence it believes that Germany should take greater interest in the Indo-Pacific, just as we in India seek to do in the Euro-Atlantic.

“In a globalised existence, instability anywhere has consequences everywhere. It is untenable therefore for major nations to limit their horizons. But to act on that, it is necessary to forge partnerships and understandings. That is best done where there is comfort, where there is confidence and where there is convergence. This is what we are seeking to build between India and Germany, a stronger relationship. And that is why we believe Germany too should take greater interest in the Indo-Pacific, just as we in India seek to do in the Euro-Atlantic,” said Jaishankar.
Jaishankar travelled to Germany after visiting Saudi Arabia for the first meeting between foreign ministers of India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh on Monday. After his engagements in Germany on Tuesday, Jaishankar will leave for Switzerland.
