A group of journalists was detained and allegedly assaulted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers while covering developments in the West Bank, sparking outrage among journalists and renewed concerns over press freedom in conflict zones.

The Incident

A video shared on social media by CNN Jerusalem correspondent Jeremy Diamond shows the crew walking near a Palestinian village when they were stopped by armed IDF soldiers, who ordered them to sit down. After they complied with the directive, soldiers moved to seize their cameras and phones.

The situation further escalated when a soldier placed CNN photojournalist Cyril Theophilos in a chokehold and forced him to the ground. Theophilos later wrote that the soldier “pushed and strangled me.” The crew was held for approximately two hours before being released.

IDF apologises

The IDF issued a formal apology to CNN following the incident, stating that “the actions and behavior of the soldiers in the incident are incompatible with what is expected of IDF soldiers.”

However, it has not satisfied many news journalists. Axios global affairs correspondent Barak Ravid called for concrete consequences. He argued that apologies alone were insufficient and that accountability in such cases was rarely enforced.

The CNN crew had been reporting near Tayasir, a village that had recently come under pressure from Israeli settlers who established an outpost in the area. During their detention, Diamond noted that conversations with soldiers revealed settler ideology appeared to be influencing military conduct in the region.

Trump’s peace plan for region

The assault has revived the negative images that arose out of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023. Diplomatic efforts to completely end the war have intensified in recent months.

US President Donald Trump has proposed what he calls a sweeping peace framework for the region, which includes a vision to redevelop Gaza into what he has described as a prosperous zone. A Board of Peace has constituted to oversee the development plans for the region.

In the absence of any concrete implementation framework for peace, the situation in both Gaza and the West Bank continues to remain deeply volatile till date.
