French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that he could run for a third in 2032.
The French constitution limits the president to two consecutive five-year terms but allows a third a term after a break. This means that Macron can run for a third term in 2032, but whether he would run or would be in a position to run would be another thing altogether.
Macron became the President of France in 2017 and was re-elected in 2022. His term will end in 2027.
Over the years, Macron has expressed frustration with the two-term limit and has lately suggested that he has considered a run in 2032.
In recent years, as Russia has plunged Europe in the worst security crisis since the World War II and Europe has seen a far-right surge, centrist Macron has seen himself as the leading voice of Europe. He has sought to extend the French policy of strategic autonomy to the continent, pitch France as the net security provider by providing Europe with a nuclear deterrent umbrella , and work towards keeping the far-right forces in check.
At home, however, Macron’s approval rating has suffered even as he prevented the far-right from winning parliamentary elections last year by a series of masterful political calculations with snap elections.
‘I am counting on you’
Macron on Sunday gave the clearest indication that he could run for presidency in 2032.
“I still need your help and I’m counting on you — for the next two years … in five years, in 10 years. You’ll be here, and count on me, I’ll be here with you,” said Macron.
However, Macron’s current approval rating is almost at an all-time low of 22 per cent, according to pollster Elabe.
In 2023, Macron described the limit of two consecutive terms as “damnable bullshit”.

More ShortsIn yet another indication about a run in 2032, Macron refused to deny a run in 2032 in an interview in May.
“When I have finished [the current term], I will be able to answer you but for now I have not thought about it,” said Macron.
