New York City’s Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, and his wife, Rama Duwaji, currently call a simple one-bedroom rental apartment in the affordable neighbourhood of Astoria home. But the 34-year-old politician is facing a decision that could catapult him from a modest 800-square-foot space—complete with the occasional leaky sink—to one of the city’s most elegant residences.
The mansion vs. the minimalist
Mamdani recently admitted that their one-bedroom is “a little too small” and even recounted a morning spent frantically laying towels to contain a plumbing leak.
All of those troubles could vanish if he chooses to move into Gracie Mansion, the 226-year-old official mayoral residence on the Upper East Side.
Gracie Mansion is a sprawling 11,000-square-foot historic home that offers much more than just a leak-free existence. It features gleaming chandeliers, a grand fireplace, faux mahogany doors, and extensive grounds, including a huge lawn lined with apple and fig trees, a vegetable garden, and stunning views of the East River.
It even comes with a full-time chef.
Why mayors always choose the mansion
Mamdani hasn’t made a final decision yet, stating, “I don’t yet have an answer on where I’m going to be living, but I can tell you where I’m going to be working, and that’s City Hall.”
However, tradition—and security—often wins out.
While the mayor-elect’s current Astoria building is a charming 1929 structure with a rare elevator, Gracie Mansion offers something far more critical: top-tier security.
Surrounded by a high fence with cameras and police officers constantly stationed outside, this security, along with the generous space for official gatherings, is reportedly why almost every mayor ultimately chooses to make the historic mansion their home.
