As the ongoing crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate, Hezbollah said that it has targeted the Israeli military base near the northern city of Haifa. It is pertinent to note that this is the third attack on the military position in just one day. The attack also came at a time when Israel marks the first anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas in the country’s south.

According to AFP, the Lebanese militant group launched “a salvo of Fadi 1 rockets at the Carmel base south of Haifa". While sirens engulfed the northern coastal city, IDF said on Sunday that around 120 rockets were fired from Lebanon at northern Israel. Videos circulating online show heavy damage in Haifa.

The videos show smoke rising above apartments during the rocket barrage as the authorities investigate the impact sites in the city. Shortly after the attack, the Israeli army noted that its air defence system failed to prevent the infiltration of the rockets.

5 injured by shrapnel

According to The Times of Israel, five people were wounded in the rocket impact in Haifa. The figures were confirmed by medical officials in the Rambam hospital. The authorities said that one of the victims is listed in good-to-moderate condition, and the other four are lightly hurt.

The hospital noted that all five were hit by shrapnel and none of them is in a life-threatening condition. One more person was taken to the hospital for severe anxiety. The IDF stated that it is investigating why the air defence system failed to intercept a barrage of five rockets launched into the port city.

“Interception attempts were made,” the IDF says, adding that several rocket impacts were identified in the area. “The incident is being investigated,” the Israeli military furthered. Footage from Haifa showed that a traffic circle in the northern coastal city was damaged by a direct rocket impact. It is pertinent to note that Israel is currently on high alert as the Jewish nation marks the first anniversary of the October 7 attack.
