US President Donald Trump has deported illegal immigrants to a lesser-known African country of Estawani, days after the Supreme Court lifted a ban on sending migrants to third-world countries.
The US Homeland Security Department on Tuesday announced that a deportation flight carrying immigrants from different countries had landed in Eswatini, a country located in South Africa.
“A safe third country deportation flight to Eswatini in Southern Africa has landed — This flight took individuals so uniquely barbaric that their home countries refused to take them back,” US Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said.
Who has been deported?
In a post on X, McLaughlin named five deportees from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba and Yemen and said they were convicted of crimes ranging from child rape to murder.
Earlier this month, a memo by a top Trump administration official said that immigration officials may deport illegal immigrants to countries other than their home nations with as little as six hours’ notice.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement will generally wait at least 24 hours to deport someone after informing them of their removal to a so-called “third country,” according to a memo dated July 9 from the agency’s acting director, Todd Lyons.
ICE could remove them, however, to a so-called “third country” with as little as six hours’ notice “in exigent circumstances,” the memo said, as long as the person was provided the chance to speak with an attorney.
The memo stated that migrants could be sent to nations that have pledged not to persecute or torture them “without the need for further procedures.”
Where is Eswatini?
Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa bordered by South Africa and Mozambique.
While it has made strides in education and health, Eswatini faces challenges such as high unemployment and one of the world’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. Its economy largely depends on agriculture, manufacturing, and regional trade.
