A shooting incident took place at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday (April 17), leaving one person dead and at least six others injured, including one individual in critical condition.
The incident unfolded near the student union, prompting an immediate lockdown and a swift emergency response from law enforcement and medical teams.
The university issued a midday alert warning of an active shooter on campus. Police quickly arrived and began securing the area, sweeping buildings room by room to ensure student and staff safety.
One taken into custody
One suspect has been taken into custody, though authorities have not yet released further details about their identity or motive. Officials are also working to determine if others may have been involved.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear. Sirmans, one of the witnesses, recounted alarms sounding inside the university’s main library and how students were evacuated with their hands raised under police supervision.
Federal officials, including members of the FBI, are assisting with the ongoing investigation. The full scope of injuries is still being assessed, and the campus remains under shelter-in-place orders as the investigation continues.
Trump reacts
US President Donald Trump also reacted to the incident, calling it a “shame”.
During a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump addressed the situation. “I have been briefed on the Florida State University active shooter. It’s a shame,” he said.
