German chancellor Olaf Scholz warns of 'bidding war' for weapon deliveries to Ukraine

German chancellor Olaf Scholz warned on Sunday (January 29) of a ‘bidding war’ when it came to weapon deliveries to Ukraine. “What we need now is a serious debate in which to be decide what has to be decided without creating a bidding war, in which perhaps domestic political motives are in the foreground instead of support for Ukraine. When it comes to such important things as weapons, it has to be about factual issues, about rational weighing,” Scholz said during a state visit to Chile. A German government spokesperson reiterated this position on Monday (January 30) during a press conference in Berlin in regards to Germany’s refusal to send fighter jets to Ukraine, calling it a ‘very hypothetical question’. “But of course we are in close coordination with our partners on all these issues. And that remains the same as with the other principles, namely that we want to avoid NATO or Germany becoming a warring party in Russia’s war of aggression by Russia,” said government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann. Germany had decided to send modern Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine last week, paving the way for other countries such as Poland, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands and Norway to supply some of their Leopard tanks to Ukraine, going some way towards delivering the hundreds of tanks that Ukraine says it needs.
