Alex Soros, son of American billionaire George Soros, met Bangladesh’s interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on Thursday. He is also the chairperson of Open Society Foundations (OSF).
The meeting came after US President Donald Trump halted aid for Dhaka. This is the second meeting between Soros and Yunus in three months, following their meeting in New York last October.
Yunus emphasised that the delegation, led by Soros and OSF president Binaifer Nowrojee, expressed their support for the interim government’s reform agenda.
“Open Society Foundations’ leadership on Wednesday met the chief interim adviser to discuss Bangladesh’s efforts to rebuild the economy, trace siphoned-off assets, combat misinformation, and carry out vital economic reforms,” Yunus said on X.
The two also met on 3 October last year in New York, where Alex Soros called Yunus an “old friend of my father.” It is alleged that Yunus has financial links to George Soros.
Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) have been accused of supporting regime changes in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Some believe it played a role in the removal of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh last August. Hasina had also accused the US of involvement in the unrest but did not provide details.
George Soros and his organisation have recently drawn attention in India as well.
His name appeared in controversies surrounding the Adani Group, with claims that Soros-funded groups were behind the OCCRP report accusing Adani of using secretive Mauritius-based funds for investments.
