Six suspects were arrested in the French city of Lyon in connection with the country’s latest heist after the incident at the Louvre. According to the BBC, thieves attempted to rob a precious metal refinery on Thursday when they attempted to break into the building using explosives.
The loot was mostly gold worth $13.8 million, sparking security concerns across the country. After a police chase following the robbery, the French authorities caught the suspect and recovered the haul.
What is concerning is the fact that the heist was orchestrated just days after five people were arrested over a theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris earlier this month.
Neighbours’ alert disrupted the heist
Multiple videos from the Lyon incident, circulating online by people living nearby, show two men near a white van. One could be seen placing a ladder over the company’s fence before scaling it.
In a separate video, a robber was seen carrying a weapon and opening the rear door of the van, while another was loading briefcases into the vehicle. A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told the AFP that she heard a big explosion. “It was really impressive,” she said.
As per the report, five employees of the firm Pourquery Laboratories suffered minor injuries in the explosion, orchestrated by the robbers. While the authorities did not reveal the identities of the suspects, they mentioned that a woman was among those detained after the chase on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the latest arrests over the Louvre heist in Paris bring the number of those detained to seven. On October 19, four suspects used a mechanical lift to gain access to the museum’s Gallery of Apollo in broad daylight.
