The latest in a long series of moronic, jawdroppingly stupid remarks by American news anchors, a Fox News presenter appeared to suggest a link between the use of the metric system by non-US pilots trained pilots and the disappearance of AirAsia flight QZ8501. Yeah, you read that right, it is because we Asians use the metric system. Previously, in October The Five" co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle suggested that young women should not vote in the upcoming US midterm elections for the same reason that they should be excused from jury duty- because they don’t have the same “life experience” as older women and, wait for it, should just go back to playing around on Tinder and Match.com. And following the release of a 6,700-page report on American torture practices “Outnumbered” co-host Andrea Tantaros said this on air. “The United States of America is awesome, we are awesome,” she said. “We’ve closed the book on it, and we’ve stopped doing it. And the reason they want to have this discussion is not to show how awesome we are. This administration wants to have this discussion to show us how we’re not awesome.” Anna Kooiman asked former FAA spokesperson Scott Brenner if the “real reason” the AirAsia plane disappeared was because of the “different way other countries train their pilots." “Even when we think about temperature, it’s Fahrenheit or Celsius,” she says, “It’s kilometres or miles. You know, everything about their training could be similar, but different.” She continues: “So it’s not just differences in the way that we measure things, it is a difference in the way that our pilots are actually trained, is it not as safe in that part of the world? Brenner emphasised the reliance of non-US pilots on automatic pilot during flights. He said: “And a lot of that… is because a lot of crashes are due to pilot error. “So, if you try and eliminate any potential risk, you try and eliminate the pilot’s ability to make incorrect inputs into the aircraft.” Both the presenter and Fox news received a lot of flak on social media.
