Four new advisers join Yunus' interim govt taking total number of members to 21

Weeks after a new interim government took over Bangladesh, four more advisers joined the administration headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath-taking ceremony of the new advisers. India’s neighbouring country has been in a transitionary phase after the nationwide anti-government protest led to the fall of the country’s Former PM Sheikh Hasina.

According to Bangladeshi news outlet Prothom Alo, the oat-taking ceremony took place on Friday. The new advisers who took oath in the ceremony were; economist Wahiduddin Mahmud, former cabinet secretary Ali Imam Majumder, former power secretary Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan and Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

With 21 advisers Bangladesh heads towards a transition

After Friday’s oath-taking ceremony, the interim government will now comprise 21 members. The new advisers are yet to be appointed as in charge of a particular ministry. It is pertinent to note that after assuming office, Yunus has already taken charge of 24 ministries and departments including the cabinet division, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Ministry of Food, Ministry of Agriculture, ministry of public administration and ministry of commerce, Prothom Alo reported.

Earlier today, Yunus held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, PM Modi said that he had a telephone conversation with Yunus.

During the conversation, the two leaders discussed the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh and Yunus assured the “safety and protection” of all minorities in the country. “Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Yunus was appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government following a nationwide anti-government protests. The demonstrations which eventually turned violent, led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. After ending her 15-year-long reign, the former Bangladeshi premier fled from Dhaka and is currently in India.
