European leaders form another huddle for peace in Ukraine as Trump talks raise ceasefire hopes

EU leaders will come together in Ukraine to discuss peace and war efforts on Tuesday,  a Polish government spokesman announced.

“At 11:00 am, Prime Minister Donald Tusk will take part in another conversation of European leaders on the subject of Ukraine,” government spokesman Adam Szlapka wrote on X.

This meeting is part of the ongoing high-level diplomatic negotiations that have taken place since November, aimed at ending the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday.  

Trump and Zelensky discussed a reworked 20-point peace framework, refined from an earlier 28-point draft that Kyiv felt pushed Ukraine too close to capitulation.

  Zelensky said the plan was “90 per cent agreed”, claiming that this is a substantial progress. However, Trump avoided percentages but said that deal was within reach.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and negotiators from Kyiv spoke by phone with US envoy Steve Witkoff.

“We’re getting a lot closer, maybe very close,” Trump said, even as he warned the negotiations could still collapse in the coming weeks.  

Both sides agreed their teams would meet again soon to finalise outstanding details, with broader talks involving European leaders.

The meeting followed with a telephonic conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin later called “friendly and businesslike.” Trump went further, saying Putin had been “ very generous in his feelings toward Ukraine succeeding.”

Zelensky described the guarantees discussed with Trump as “strong”, though not yet permanent.

Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine and Russia hold fundamentally different positions. However, he also indicated limited flexibility, adding that any territorial settlement would require a ceasefire first, followed by a referendum or parliamentary approval conditions Moscow has so far rejected.

The involvement of Europe shows Trump’s insistence that any lasting peace must be a shared responsibility.
