US President Donald Trump publicly addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to focus on ending the war in Ukraine rather than conducting tests of new strategic weapons.
Trump said Russia’s test was “not appropriate” while speaking to reporters during his Asia tour.
“He ought to get the war (in Ukraine) ended. A war that should have taken one week is now soon in its fourth year. That’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles,” Trump was quoted as saying.
Trump’s comments came just one day after Russia confirmed it had tested the Burevestnik, a nuclear-capable and nuclear-powered cruise missile. The demonstration of the advanced weapon system has heightened global tensions and renewed focus on Russia’s strategic nuclear arsenal.
Is Trump done playing nice with Putin?
In August 2025, President Trump sought to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table in an effort to end the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year. The two leaders met in Alaska for a summit aimed at achieving peace—a meeting Trump later described as “successful.”
However, in the weeks following the meeting, Russia renewed and escalated its attacks on Ukraine, much to Trump’s frustration. In response, the US President issued multiple warnings and ultimatums to Moscow, Putin, and Russia’s trade partners in an effort to push for a ceasefire.
In a clear move to increase leverage, the US government, in its latest attempt, announced fresh sanctions targeting two major Russian energy companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
The President also introduced a condition for future diplomacy. Ahead of his Asia tour, Trump told reporters that he would not meet with President Vladimir Putin again until a verifiable peace deal to end the Ukraine war is secured.
“I’m going to have to know that we’re going to make a deal. I’m not going to be wasting my time,” Trump stated on Sunday. He acknowledged his long-standing personal dynamic with Putin, but expressed disappointment with the current situation. “I’ve always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing,” he added.
