US President Donald Trump arrived in Canada on Sunday to attend the G7 Leaders' Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Alberta on Monday. Trump returned to an international summit amid escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, which is likely to dominate the agenda.

During the three-day gathering in the mountain town of Kananaskis, world leaders would attempt to convince Trump to ease his Tariff policy. The summit will also feature Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will arrive in Canada after his trip to Croatia and Cyprus.

The US Air Force One, carrying Trump, touched down at the Calgary airport as he is set to join world leaders at the G7 summit. It is pertinent to note that this is the first time Trump has been to Canada in seven years, a country he wants to make the US’s 51st state.

What lies ahead

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with Trump on Monday morning, the same day the summit would kick off. It is being seen as an opportunity for Carney to work on relations with the country’s biggest trading partner, after months of instability caused by Trump’s trade war and repeated musings about annexing Canada.

The summit is also coming days after tensions escalated between Iran and Israel in West Asia, with both nations exchanging missile strikes. Hence, the conflict in the region is expected to remain a major topic at the international summit. It is pertinent to note that the G7 also includes France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as the European Union.

On Tuesday, the summit is expected to focus on foreign policy and would involve at least 10 invited leaders from non-member countries or international institutions, with PM Modi among the list of invited leaders.

Trump returns to the summit he once loathed, but this time with an upper hand

While the G7 Summit in the past saw Trump spar with his counterparts, the new batch of leaders is more likely to focus on playing nice with Trump and avoiding confrontation. Before the summit, leaders such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Macron, and Carney have all had relatively successful, at least unremarkable-meetings with Trump since his return to office.

While most of the group’s members are likely to keep things pleasant, French President Emmanuel Macron might turn out to be an anomaly in this regard. Earlier this year, Macron had a warm meeting with Trump. However, before heading to Canada, the French president visited Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, which Trump wants to annexe. The visit might make Trump upset since Macron reiterated the sovereignty of the Danish territory.

Interestingly, the leaders are not preparing a joint communique this time around, given that differences are too large on everything from climate change to artificial intelligence to women’s empowerment. Instead of this, they are set to issue separate statements on half a dozen subjects. However, a joint statement on Ukraine isn’t among them.

Ukraine peace talks conclude in Abu Dhabi as Donbas issue remains unresolved

Trilateral peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US ended without clear outcomes, with further negotiations planned in Abu Dhabi next week. Talks concluded after Russian strikes on Kyiv killed at least one, injured four, and left 1.2 million properties without power amid freezing temperatures. Russia repeated its demand for Ukrainian troop withdrawal from eastern regions, while Ukraine rejected any territorial concessions, leaving Donbas unresolved.
