Former US President Donald Trump has said that if he is voted to power, he will support the existing ban on abortion but only after a certain number of weeks of gestation.
Trump, however, did not mention the exact number of weeks, leaving his stance on the most controversial issue that America has witnessed in years, murky.
Speaking to Fox News, the former president assured that he will “soon” come up with a proposal on the number of weeks at which a ban should be implemented.
What’s Trump’s stand on abortion?
In a New York Times report from February, Trump was quoted telling his advisers that he supports the idea of a 16-week abortion ban – barring cases of rape, incest or the mother’s health. But till now, the Republican has refused to make any public comment on the matter to keep his socially conservative voters wooed.
His recent comments, although, do not mention the number of weeks Trump thinks is suitable to terminate a pregnancy.
“I think the recommendation will be accepted,” Trump said, adding he was proud that his three Supreme Court nominations had shifted the court’s balance rightward, allowing it in 2022 to end federally guaranteed abortion rights.
‘You have three exceptions’
Abortion has been a key issue raised by candidates in the run-up to the upcoming presidential elections, with Democrats advocating pro-choice rights to woo voters.

More ShortsBiden and Democrats have been leaning strongly into the issue – regularly pointing out that polls show most Americans oppose a federal ban – and Trump indicated Sunday that he was aware of the political risks involved.
“I think you have to have the three exceptions,” he said.
“You have to go with your heart. But beyond that, you also have to get elected, okay. And if you don’t have the three exceptions, I think it’s very, very hard to get elected.”
