The idea of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was introduced by Elon Musk during casual musing at a dinner party in 2023 in California’s Silicon Valley.
The gathering took place at the mansion of technology investor Chamath Palihapitiya and eventually evolved into a radical restructuring of the federal government, The New York Times reported.
Musk spoke on various topics during the meeting, including his recent trip to the U.S.-Mexico border, the Ukraine war, and frustrations with government regulations affecting SpaceX.
He also discussed Ramaswamy’s goal of dismantling federal bureaucracy, terming it a technological challenge, as he himself is a tech entrepreneur.
Drawing from his experience restructuring Twitter (now X), he emphasised the importance of gaining access to company servers.
At the dinner party, Elon Musk cracked a joke, saying that if he had access to the federal government’s computers—just the passwords—he could streamline operations.
What started as a casual remark has now taken shape as an aggressive push to reshape the federal bureaucracy of the United States of America.
Musk-led Doge’s mission
President Donald Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with Elon Musk as its chief, aiming to cut federal expenditure and streamline government operations.
This initiative led to mass layoffs across various federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
These actions targeted multiple agencies, including the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Impact Shorts
View AllThe SSA announced plans to reduce its workforce, with reports suggesting up to 50% of its 60,000 employees could be affected.
DOGE has instructed federal workers to justify their roles via email, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and anxiety among public-sector employees.
Doge faces legal challenges
However, these mass terminations have faced legal challenges.
A federal judge in California blocked the administration’s directive to dismiss probationary employees, ruling that the Office of Personnel Management had overstepped its authority.
Musk’s expanding influence
Musk’s team of engineers and aides has now embedded itself in key government digital systems, The New York Times reported.
According to the report, his “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) already has influence over more than 20 agencies.
