A group of leading governors from the Democratic Party rallied behind US President Joe Biden after he assured that he wouldn’t be leaving the race for the White House. The governors, including Tim Walz of Minnesota, Wes Moore of Maryland, Gavin Newsom of California and Kathy Hochul of New York, came out in support of Biden after holding a closed-door meeting with the president.
The calls for Biden to leave the race, reached an all-time high after he gave a lacklustre performance in the first 2024 presidential debate against Former US President Donald Trump. The POTUS conducted an hour-long meeting with the aforementioned governors and 20 other Democratic governors took part in the meeting virtually.
After it was over, the governors told local reporters that the conversation was “candid” and they spoke to Biden about his debate performance. The US lawmakers reiterated that defeating Trump would be their utmost priority but supporting Biden in this time is also important.
‘We want a clear path to victory’: Democrats
While speaking to the reporters, the governors assured that the party wants a clear path of victory in the upcoming 2024 presidential elections and made it clear that they will stand behind Biden.
“We, like many Americans, are worried,” Walz of Minnesota said. “We are all looking for the path to win – all the governors agree with that. President Biden agrees with that," he told reporters on Wednesday.
“He has had our backs through Covid … the governors have his back. We’re working together just to make very, very clear that a path to victory in November is the No 1 priority and that’s the No 1 priority of the president … The feedback was good. The conversation was honest,” Wes Moore of Maryland averred.

More Shorts“The president is our nominee. The president is our party leader,” he added. The proclamation from the governors came after some lawmakers from the Democratic Party called for Biden to abandon his re-election bid.
On Wednesday, Representative Raul Grijalva became the second House Democrat to call for President Joe Biden to quit the race. In an interview with The New York Times, Grijalva said that the President should “shoulder the responsibility for keeping that seat — and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race.”
However, the lawmaker from Arizona made it clear that he would support Biden if he remains the Democratic nominee.
Biden remains adamant to continue in the race
The president for his part also made it clear that he will stay in the race. “Let me say this as clearly as I possibly can, as simply and straightforward as I can: I am running … no one’s pushing me out,” Biden said on a call with staffers from his re-election campaign. “I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win," he added.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris also insisted that she is standing by Biden’s side despite some insiders reportedly rallying around her as a possible replacement.
“We will not back down. We will follow our president’s lead,” the vice president reportedly told staffers on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. With the proclamation from Biden himself, it is safe to say that the 81-year-old Commander-in-chief is not backing down anytime soon.
