The European Union needs to ensure that Ukraine has enough ammunition to continue its fight against the Russian invasion, the EU’s top diplomat said on Monday (February 20). “It is the most urgent issue. If we fail on that, the result of the war is in danger,” Josep Borrell said before a meeting with foreign affairs ministers from the EU countries in Brussels. “The Russian artillery shoots about 50,000 shots a day, and Ukraine needs to be at the same level of capacity. They have cannons but they lack ammunition.” Ministers also expressed some scepticism about China’s announcement that it would outline its position on a possible “political settlement” to the Ukraine war. “We are afraid of course that Russia will find new sources of weapons and new sources of ammunition, and we hope that China would not be actively supporting militarily Russia but really trying to sincerely support the peace,” said Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. Among the other topics the ministers were set to discuss were a new package of sanctions against Iran for its crackdown on anti-regime protesters, as well as measure to guarantee Moldova’s – a neighbouring country to Ukraine – stability.
