Amid the growing tensions in the Middle East, Israel continued with its barrage of attacks in Lebanon with its death toll surpassing the 100 mark. Not only this, the Jewish nation opened a new front for attack and launched a wave of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. On Sunday, the Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that at least 105 people had been killed and around 359 were injured as Israel continued to pound the Middle Eastern nation.

The fresh assaults on Iran-backed proxies make many concerned that what started as an Israel-Hamas war is turning out to be a bigger regional conflict. On Sunday, dozens of Israeli planes came near the port of Hodeidah in Yemen and launched rockets to target fuel facilities, power plants and docks at the Ras Issa and Hodeidah ports.

This was the biggest operation the region witnessed during the nearly year-long crisis. Houthi news outlets reported that the airstrikes killed four people and wounded 33. The strikes also caused power cuts for most parts of Hodeidah. The strikes in Yemen came 48 hours after Israel conducted its operation that killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, leaving the Lebanese militant group completely paralysed.

Israel continues to pound Lebanon

A series of salvos were launched from Lebanon on Sunday, including the one Hezbollah said targeted a group of Israeli soldiers. However, Israel did not stop with its attacks in Beirut. Amid the chaos, a statement issued by the office of the Israeli defence minister, Yoav Gallant, after he monitored the strikes from an air force command centre, said: “Our message is clear. For us, no place is too far.”

The Israeli military later mentioned that the air force had struck dozens of targets, including launchers and weapons stores, while its navy said it had intercepted eight projectiles coming from the direction of Lebanon. The military noted that the strikes that were concentrated in the south of Lebanon were a tit-for-tat exchange between the two parties.

Drones could be heard flying over all parts of the Lebanese capital overnight and throughout the day on Sunday. On the same day, the Israeli military confirmed that they had killed Nabil Kaouk, the deputy chairman of Hezbollah’s executive council, in a strike. The Iran-backed group eventually confirmed his death, bringing the number of senior Hezbollah leaders who have died in Israeli strikes in the last 10 days to seven.

The senior Hezbollah leaders killed in the strike include three founding members who had evaded death or detention for decades. The recent strike came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintained that the killing of Nasrallah was a necessary step in “changing the balance of power in the region for years to come”. “Nasrallah was not a terrorist, he was the terrorist,” he said, warning of challenging days ahead.
