At least three people were injured today after a gunman opened fire at Florida State University in the United States. Florida State University had warned of a ‘dangerous situation’ on the Tallahassee campus. A telephone alert early Thursday urged people to take shelter in a nearby building and stay away from doors and windows. The alert provided no details of what sparked the warning, and campus and Tallahassee police declined to comment, reported The Associated Press. The University confirmed that law enforcement had secured the library where the shooting allegedly took place. In three tweets, the University updates students on the situation on campus:

He said to stay away from doors and windows and to stay where we were. We all waited then the police came back on and said the gunman was in custody and to stay where we were,” ABC News quoted a junior year student, Toni Haywood as saying. “[Haywood] was on the second floor of the Strozier Library at about 12:30 am, when she heard gunshots,” ABC reported. ABC-affiliate WEWS NewsChannel5 posted a video of students gathered in the library, listening to an announcement by university authorities who confirmed the shooting and provided instructions in case anyone has been shot. FSU is the largest University in the Florida and has close to 40,000 students enrolled “in 16 colleges spread across Tallahassee, the state capital,” the New York Times reported. “The university has recently drawn criticism for reports of preferential treatment in criminal matters for athletes on its football team, a contender for this year’s national collegiate championship,” the NYT report added. More details are awaited.
