The documents, made public by US lawmakers earlier this month, include a letter attributed to Chomsky where he described the discussions he had with the disgraced financier as a “most valuable experience.”

Newly released emails and documents suggest that renowned linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky maintained a far closer and more regular association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein than previously disclosed, with contact continuing for years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor.

The documents, made public by US lawmakers earlier this month, include a letter attributed to Chomsky where he described the discussions he had with the disgraced financier as a “most valuable experience.” This revelation complicates Chomsky’s previous claims that his relationship with Epstein was limited to occasional academic or political discussions.

The most critical document released is an undated letter of support, written “to whom it may concern” and bearing a typed signature of Chomsky, citing his position at the University of Arizona. In the letter, Chomsky stated he and Epstein had been in “regular contact” with “many long and often in-depth discussions” since they first met.

The philosopher praised Epstein for his “limitless curiosity, extensive knowledge, penetrating insights and thoughtful appraisals,” and even credited Epstein with teaching him about the “intricacies of the global financial system” in a way professional journals could not.

Furthermore, reports indicate Chomsky acknowledged receiving approximately $270,000 from an account connected to Epstein while managing the finances of his first marriage. Chomsky has insisted that “not one penny” came directly from Epstein, but the transaction still links the academic to the financier’s orbit.

Offers of residence and ongoing friendship

The correspondence also points to a more personal connection, including a 2015 email in which Epstein offered Chomsky the use of his luxurious residences in New York and New Mexico.

In a separate 2017 email, Chomsky’s wife, Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, apologized to Epstein for missing his birthday, adding, “Noam and I hope to see you again soon and have a toast for your birthday.” This communication took place nearly a decade after Epstein’s conviction, underscoring the duration of the relationship.

These documents were part of a wider release detailing Epstein’s extensive network among academic, political, and business elites, which has already prompted consequences for other high-profile figures. Former Harvard University President Larry Summers recently relinquished a teaching role after his own email exchanges with Epstein were disclosed.

The revelations come as pressure mounts on officials to release more files related to Epstein’s case. Neither Chomsky, who was reported in 2024 to be convalescing following a stroke, nor the University of Arizona immediately responded to requests for comment.
