Days after Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laureate María Corina Machado said she wanted to share her Nobel Peace Prize with US President Donald Trump, the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that the award cannot be shared, transferred or revoked.

In a statement, the committee said, “A Nobel Prize can neither be revoked, shared, nor transferred to others. Once the announcement has been made, the decision stands for all time.”

The clarification came after Machado said she wished to dedicate the prize to Trump following a US military operation in Caracas. Speaking to Fox News, she said she believed Trump deserved the award for actions she described as impossible for many to achieve.

Trump said on Saturday that he would discuss Machado’s offer when she visits Washington next week. “I think it’s very nice she wants to come in, and that’s what I understand the reason is,” he said.

Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for opposing what the Norwegian Nobel Committee described as a dictatorship in Venezuela. After the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his transfer to the US to face charges including narco-terror conspiracy, Machado did not assume leadership of the country. Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez succeeded Maduro.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute noted that while prize money can be shared at the winner’s discretion, the Nobel Peace Prize itself cannot be transferred to another individual. It added that the committee does not comment on laureates’ actions after receiving the award, but continues to closely monitor their activities.

Trump has repeatedly said he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, crediting himself with ending eight wars within eight months of his second presidential term. He has also criticised former US President Barack Obama for receiving the award in 2009 shortly after taking office.

Commenting again on Machado’s visit, Trump said she would be coming to Washington to “pay her regards to our country, really to me,” adding that he represents the country.

The Syrian army claims to have taken control of Aleppo's Sheikh Maksoud district from Kurdish fighters after a failed ceasefire, though Kurdish forces deny losing the area. Fighting in Aleppo has killed at least nine civilians and displaced over 140,000 people since Tuesday. US and international efforts continue to push for a ceasefire and peaceful Kurdish withdrawal from Aleppo.
