Nijjar, the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) was killed by shooters outside British Columbia’s Gurudwara in Surrey on June 18, 2023. Four Indian nationals – Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh – have been accused of carrying out Nijjar’s assassination.
The Khalistani leader is added to the list of “designated terrorists” by the Indian government along with 40 other individuals.
Nijjar’s death has put a spotlight on India-Canada relations with the former accusing the latter harbouring Khalistani terrorists while Ottawa has blamed New Delhi for killing its citizens on Canadian soil.
However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said that there is an “alignment” on several “big issues” with India and he sees an “opportunity” to engage with the new Indian government including on economic ties and “around national security”.
Meanwhile, the Canadian police have charged the three accused with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
