The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a Rs 10,200-crore deal for procuring ammunition for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system. The decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security will provide a major boost to the modernisation of artillery.

Two contracts will be signed for the same by March 31. The two deals are Rs 5,700 crore for high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition and Rs 4,500 crore for area denial ammunition.

The two types of ammunition will be produced by the Nagpur-based private sector Solar Group and state-owned Munitions India Limited.

The deal was signed with Nagpur-based private sector Solar Group and state-owned Munitions India Limited, a source told The Times of India. The two companies will produce the ammunition in a 60:40 ratio.

“As soon as we get longer ranges, we might drop plans for other alternate long-range weapons we are looking at and concentrate on it (Pinaka),” Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi said.

Plans to expand Pinaka regiment

The Army currently has four Pinaka regiments. Some of the launchers of the regiment are also placed in high-altitude areas along the Line of Actual Control at the Indo-Tibet border. There are plans to induct six more regiments into the military.

Made-in-India, indigenous and advance

The Pinaka is a made-in-India, indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher system designed to deliver a high volume of firepower in a short time. Each Pinaka launcher can fire 12 rockets in 44 seconds, targeting areas up to 40 kilometres away. The system has been integrated into the Indian Army’s artillery units, with plans to expand its deployment in the coming years.

Pinaka’s precise striking ability

The rocket is known for delivering precise strikes at high altitudes, making it one of the most advanced artillery rocket systems globally.

Developed by DRDO

It was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The current range of the system is 75 km, but DRDO plans to expand it to 150 km and eventually up to 300 km.
