Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (October 22) for bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Brics summit in Russia, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced.
The meeting, expected to focus on improvements in India-China relations after both sides reached a consensus on a patrolling arrangement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) following years of tensions, is set to happen on Wednesday (October 23).
“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting held between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the Brics Summit,” ANI quoted Misri as saying.
The announcement follows a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry, which said both countries have been in regular communication through diplomatic and military channels to resolve ongoing border issues. “Over a recent period, China and India have reached a resolution on relevant matters,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said. While the agreement was confirmed, specific details were not disclosed.
India announced a day earlier that it had reached an agreement with China on patrolling along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh, marking a significant step in easing the military standoff that began in 2020.
The Brics Summit 2024, hosted by Russia, seeks to enhance cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries in the face of global tensions, including the conflict in Ukraine.
The summit has recently broadened its scope to include new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, thereby strengthening its role as a platform for discussing global development agendas.
