CNN reported that at least nine people were killed in the attack, while six others were injured.

At around 7 pm on Sunday, officials took to X to flag a “developing incident” at Bondi, urging members of the public to stay away from the area.

“Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” NSW police said. “Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand,” The Mirror reported.

In a subsequent update, authorities said: “We are still asking people in the area to take shelter until we can determine what is happening. We have media officer en route to scene, more information when confirmed.”

Eyewitnesses described hearing repeated gunshots, and videos from the scene appear to show suspects firing weapons before being taken into custody by police.

The shooting reportedly took place near a Hanukkah celebration (a Jewish festival, also known as the Festival of Lights), though officials have stressed that no link between the event and the attack has been established. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that he has been briefed as the situation continues to unfold.

Footage shared on social media shows what appear to be two suspects being restrained by police, while one civilian is seen kicking one of the detained individuals in the head. Another witness claimed to have seen thousands of people fleeing the beach in panic.

Amid online speculation, NSW police issued a clarification, saying: “There have been NO reports of any incidents at Dover Heights - please do NOT share unconfirmed rumors.”
