A mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach left at least 12 people dead and several others injured on Sunday. Local media reported that two gunmen dressed in black opened fire on a crowd of around 1,000 to 2,000 people.
More than 50 shots were fired, triggering panic along the beachfront as people ran for safety or took shelter indoors.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the scenes in Bondi were “shocking and distressing”. He said police and emergency services were on the ground working to save lives and added that his thoughts were with all those affected.
Albanese said he had spoken to the AFP Commissioner and the New South Wales Premier. He added that authorities were working with NSW Police and that further updates would be provided as more details are confirmed, urging people in the area to follow police instructions.
