'Bombing has stopped but...': US tells citizens travelling to Iran is 'not safe for anyone'

The US has issued an advisory for American citizens travelling to Iran, saying that the country is “not safe for anyone”. The State Department has cautioned US citizens, especially of Iranian descent, from travelling to the country due to “severe risks”.

State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Thursday, “The department is announcing a new awareness campaign warning Americans, especially Iranian Americans, about the continuing severe risks of travel to Iran. The Iranian regime does not recognise dual nationality and routinely denies consular services to detained US citizens. And while the bombing has stopped, that does not mean that it is safe to travel to Iran, it is not.”

The conflict between Iran and Israel, which the US joined later, ended in a ceasefire last month after American fighter jets destroyed Iranian nuclear sites, taking its programme back by several years.

Bruce also announced the launch of a new website, saying that all information related to travel advisories to warn Americans against going to Iran will be posted on the platform.

She said, “Do not travel to Iran, especially those of you who are dual citizens who have Iranian heritage. It is not safe for anyone to travel to Iran.”

Has Iran sought dialogue with US?

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said that Iranian officials have reached out to the U.S. to schedule talks about Iran’s nuclear program. Negotiations had started in April but were scuttled after Israel began its operations last month.

“We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to,” Trump told reporters. “They want to talk.” He said last week that the talks would restart soon.

Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, sitting at the table with Trump, said the meeting would be soon, perhaps in a week.

However, Tehran has yet to confirm that it has agreed to restart talks with the US.
