Memphis: US President Joe Biden spoke about the loss of his son Beau in an effort to console the parents of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black motorist who died after he was beaten by police in Memphis, Tennessee on 7 January.
Biden spoke via cellphone with RowVaughn and Rodney Wells alongside their attorney, Benjamin Crump on Friday (27 January).
Beau Biden, a former Delaware attorney general, died in 2015 at the age of 46 after battling brain cancer.
“I’m a man of faith, I’m actually a Catholic, and I have on my wrist, as I’m speaking to you, what we Catholics call a rosary… when things get tough I just touch it. I just touch it,” Biden said.
Tyre Nichols repeatedly cried, “Mom! Mom!” as the five Memphis police officers now charged with the Black motorist’s murder pummeled him with kicks, punches and baton blows after a 7 January traffic stop, video released by the city on Friday showed.
The video from police body-worn cameras and a camera mounted on a utility pole were posted online a day after the officers were charged with second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct and oppression in Nichols’ death.
RowvVaugh Wells told Biden that her son had a tattoo of her name on his arm.
“God love him. That’s what you call something special, mom,” Biden said.
The ordeal captured in the video has transformed Nichols, the father of a 4-year-old, into the latest face of a US racial justice movement galvanised by the 2020 killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
Crump urged Biden to try and get a police reform bill named for Floyd passed through the next Congress.
Biden told RowVaughn and Rodney Wells that he looked forward to meeting them.
“When you invite us to the White House, we’ll be there,” RowVaugh Wells replied.
